چکیده

This report explores the possibilities of using repellent pheromones in order to achieve efficient dispersion of a swarm of robots. The goal is to have a set of autonomous robots cover an unknown environment by collectively visiting each area once. Unlike previous research in collective exploration this report aims at achieving intelligent dispersion by relying solely on local perception of repellent pheromones, without any centralized control mechanisms. Using local sensory input and decentralized controllers promotes better scalability of the swarm, and is well suited for application on physical robots. A small number of homogeneous autonomous robots are tasked to explore randomly generated environments. The robots possess no previous knowledge of the environments nor the precise whereabouts of other robots. Repellent virtual pheromones serve as a collective memory of previously visited areas, aimed at preventing several robots from searching the same locations twice, thus increasing the exploration efficiency. The usefulness of repellent pheromones in exploration is addressed through agentbased simulations, with respect to population density, environmental layout, and pheromone evaporation rate. Experimental results show that repellent pheromones can assist robots in exploring unknown environments more efficiently and consistently. The benefits of using pheromones is shown to be greatest in low population swarms and when environments are large or contain few obstacles. Moreover, pheromones evaporating at a slow rate is shown to provide consistent improvements over rapidly evaporating pheromones.

An agent-based model to investigate the roles of attractive and repellent pheromones in ant decision making during foraging.

Pharaoh's ants organise their foraging system using three types of trail pheromone. All previous foraging models based on specific ant foraging systems have assumed that only a single attractive pheromone is used. Here we present an agent-based model based on trail choice at a trail bifurcation within the foraging trail network of a Pharaoh's ant colony which includes both attractive (positive)...

Modeling Insect-Repellent Use for Chikungunya Disease Prevention Among US-Caribbean Travelers

Introduction: This study examined the relationship between specific psychosocial variables and the use of insect repellents on skin or clothing as a preventive behavior for Chikungunya fever among US travelers to Caribbean destinations. Methods: A cross-sectional retrospective online survey method was adopted. US residents who travelled to one of 34 Carib...

Acute behavioral responses to pheromones in C. elegans (adult behaviors: attraction, repulsion).

The pheromone drop test is a simple and robust behavioral assay to quantify acute avoidance of pheromones in C. elegans, and the suppression of avoidance by attractive pheromones. In the pheromone drop test, water-soluble C. elegans pheromones are individually applied to animals that are freely moving on a large plate. Upon encountering a repellent, each C. elegans animal may or may not try to ...

Effect of pheromones on the plasma level of prolactin during pregnancy and lactating periods in female rat

Introduction: Pheromones play a great role in the reproductive and social behavior of animals. The main sources of pheromones are urine and paracrine secretions. Through the neuroendocrine system, prolactin is a safe parameter to measure and compare the effects of pheromones on the sexual, maternal and also lactating behavior. Methods: Female rats were divided into 19 groups (n=8). To measur...

Effects of male phermoneses on neuronal morphology in the dentate gyrus of hippocampus of female Mice

Background & Aims: Neurogenesis in the adult mammal brain occurs throughout life. Adult neurogenesis has been clearly demonstrated in the sub granular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus (DG) in the hippocampus. Pheromones that plays an essential role in the development of the central nervous system. The male pheromones are involved in regulating neurogenesis in both the olfactory bulb and hippocam...
